We have some exciting news to share, and we wanted those who have supported us this far to hear it here first. Effective December 31, 2025, Sense will no longer sell consumer monitors.

From the beginning, you’ve helped shape what Sense is today. Your feedback, discoveries, and energy-saving wins have driven every innovation we’ve launched. And now, because of this foundation, Sense is expanding in a big way.

Soon, our Sense consumer monitor will no longer be available for purchase. Instead, Sense technology will focus on being built directly into next-generation smart meters through partnerships with utility providers nationwide, making real-time, device-level energy insights more accessible than ever… with no extra hardware required.

What does this mean for current Sense monitor owners?

When will the Smart Meters with Sense be available? Would it make sense to upgrade to one of these and do away with our Sense Home monitor to simplify wiring? Will it monitor solar in the same way?

Congrats on moving to the next (investment/pre-IPO/ acquisition/ whatever) level. You guys deserve it.

Please do maintain the app as long as possible- some of us have grown to rely on Sense to keep us informed about a lot of things happening in our homes :slight_smile:

I for one was really hoping for a next generation device that would be able to take inputs from battery solar grid and ideally a few dedicated circuits. To me this feels like a step in a direction that will reduce access to the technology Sense has introduced.

Needing to rely on the utility for a meter to access the technology seems risky, especially after what I went through most recently with the utility failing to properly torque the service connection, almost catching my house on fire, and then refusing to pay for the damages because I was supposed to inspect and maintain a meter box that they put a security tag onto to prevent me from accessing it.

I’m glad I have my own personally owned device and really would like to see you guys continue in this direction in parallel.

@leftyfb , Sense-enabled meters are already available from the two largest meter suppliers for North America - Landis and Gyr and Itron, plus a couple of others.

But meters are almost always installed and rolled out by utilities. There are probably ways you can express your preference to your utility.

As a National Grid customer with a Sense enabled smart meter I am still waiting for Grid to throw the switch. The meter was installed in February and according an insider, by June customers should be able to use the Sense app with the meter.

Staying skeptical.

My only concern is - what if my hardware fails after 12/31, am I out of luck? I have an Aclara meter with AEP Ohio, so I’m not sure that is integrated or planned.

Unrelated, would new users need to use an interface through their electric provider, or can they onboard with the Sense app if their meter has the right software for supporting it?

Update: I GUESS if my hardware fails and my utility is not supported by sense, I could get a Wiser branded meter if they’ve forked and still plan on producing them. But then I’d need to enter the Wiser ecosystem, and they are beyond terrible)

Care to answer my other questions? Also, why discontinue manufacturing and selling the only product most people need in order to use your service when the majority of people are not able to get these new smart meters now? Why not wait until smart meters are more readily available?

UPDATE: actually, I just looked at my meter that was installed in July/August of this year. It’s a “Gentron/Itron” bi-directional meter. How can we determine if this is capable of running your service?

UPDATE2: looks like your smart meters don’t support Solar.

Again, why are we discontinuing a product when it’s replacement is not at feature parity nor availability? It’s not even something a consumer can just “get” on their own. They have to wait for their utility to make them available and then go through the process of getting it installed.

You have a reason to be skeptical - utilities are slow moving beasts. Pretty sure National Grid will bring all customers online eventually, but seems like progress has been slow.

I was sad to receive this news in my email this morning. RIP Sense Energy Monitor! :frowning:

I take every opportunity to brag and show-off my Sense app to my friends all the time. It’s really an amazing and useful tool that I think every homeowner should have.

I am hoping that the move forward Sense Smart Meters leverage the exact same server/data-center infrastructure that our Sense Energy Monitor rely on. At least that will give me some optimism that we will continue to be supported for years to come.

Unfortunately, 2025 has been a year that we’ve put (at least) two of my greatest and favorite technology products to rest, TiVo and the Sense Energy Monitor.

I hope the Sense workforce won’t be impacted by this. Good luck everyone, you made a great product!

@leftyfb, I’m not a Sense, employee. Just a curious Sense customer with a couple of monitors. So I can’t speak on their behalf, but I can give the following pointers based on what I have seen publicly:

  1. I’m sure the decision to stop selling the standalone monitors was a tough business decision. The hardware business is challenging, especially when there are long term hard costs for the associated services (networking, cloud, storage) and no subscription. I think the Sense CEO does a good job outlining the other important point - getting designed into smart meters is the right approach for building the largest user base and having the most impact.
  1. The current list of smart meter partners and models is here. Realize that these are all next-generation smart meters, that have far superior capabilities to the first generation of smart meters.
  1. There is new solar support without a second CT. You probably missed the new detection features added this month. If you look closely, you’ll notice that a lot of the recent development has been to move the Sense-enabled meters to near-parity with standalone monitors:

As I understand it, the new smart plug recognition via the TP_Link Integration and the Hue Integration are included in the meter product as well.

A few questions regarding ongoing support.

  • In addition to honoring hardware warranties, will the same support be available for fee-based out-of-warranty repairs?
  • Will repair parts and/or accessories be available for purchase moving forward? As an example, I’d love to have the ability to purchase a replacement antenna if mine breaks or goes bad. It used to be easy to find accessories on the sense webpage, but it looks like you can no longer purchase accessories direct anymore.
  • Will this forum remain supported and monitored/facilitated/moderated?

Welps, NYSEG is still in the process of installing dumb (1st gen) smart meters here. They usually upgrade every 20+ years so there is about zero chance we’ll ever get one…

NYSEG “energy reports” say that over 75% of my homes usage is from incandescent lighting. Funny as the only incandescent bulb in my entire home is in an antique decorative piece, that only gets turned on once or twice a year for a couple hours at most… Very little of my actual usage is from lighting.

Really hope Sense will offer replacement units for quite some time…

Sense and the Sense Home app are not going away. We are here and will support monitors as always while we grow the Sense software.

Yes, Kevin is right, your ability to access via meter will be determined by your utility, even if they have already installed Sense-enabled smart meters.

right, so Sense is now less accessible

I can’t speak for all the options, and I know this isn’t something you may want to hear from me, but you could buy another Sense monitor before sales end.

I’m only mentioning this because time is short. For those worried about potential monitor failure, this would buy you more time. We still plan to support them, so as long as you have a working monitor, you should be OK.
