Indeed I think there is a hole in easily findable support for the best practice here but this tells you what you need to know.

Sometimes, you will encounter situations where you will need to remove a previously detected device from your Devices list. We recommend deleting a device if:
You no longer own that device.
The device’s on/off events are consistently incorrect. We do not recommend deleting the device if an occasional on/off is missed, as accuracy will improve over time.
The device is a duplicate of another detected device. Keep in mind some devices contain multiple components and rather than being a duplicate,…
If you no longer have a device that Sense had detected in your home, you can remove it from your list of devices. To do this:
Navigate to the device’s Detail view by selecting it from the list of within the Devices view, or by tapping on a timeline event created by the device.
Click the gear icon in the top right of the app to navigate to the Device Settings view.
Tap on the Manage tab.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and select “Delete Device.”
